10 Under the Radar U.S. Cities You’ll Want to Visit This Summer
By Emily Elyse Miller
You have the whole summer ahead of you, so now’s the time to plan the perfect vacation. If you’re looking for something a little unexpected, we have ten cities that might not be top of mind — yet — but you will quickly fall in love with. Get lost in the jungle, do yoga in the desert or spend your summer on a boat. These cities may often be overlooked, but a few days in one of these destinations and you won’t want to leave.
1. Asheville, North Carolina
The perfect outdoor adventure mixed with the luxuries of a city. Spend the morning trekking through the wilderness, then the evening wandering in and out of art galleries. Known for many boutique breweries this city is one you can really get comfortable in.
2. Carmel, California
Carmel by the sea is the quaintest little town best discovered by driving up the coast of California. We suggest going to the local fish market and setting up a bonfire on the beach. With cottage-inspired shops and luxe boutique hotel Carmel is the perfect summer getaway for romance.
3. Hudson Valley, New York
The Hudson Valley is just a short trip from NYC making it the perfect weekend getaway. It’s a haven of green interspersed with little towns, vintage shops and farm stands. With a sculpture park like Storm King and restaurants like Fish & Game how could you not fall in love with Hudson?
4. Sedona, Arizona
People travel to Sedona to reconnect with nature and themselves. The gorgeous red rock definitive to that area is said to hold a vast amount of energy and spiritual significance. Go to Sedona to refresh, renew and reconnect.
5. Portland, Maine
This unexpected gem is everything you want a New England vacation; microbrews, seafood and an old lighthouse. Walk around the port for cobblestone streets filled with small boutiques and restaurants and stay in the newly opened Press Hotel — Portland’s first dive into the boutique hotel scene.
6. Marfa, Texas
Next time you’re in Austin carve out some time to drive to Marfa, the art-lovers dreamland. Filled with art installations, glamping under the stars and beautiful people in every direction this is one remote oasis that will have you sleeping in teepees and getting lost in conversation with new friends.
7. Kauai, Hawaii
I feel like we don’t need to sell Hawaii as a destination for obvious reasons, but if you’re planning an upcoming trip skip out on the islands you’ve heard of and head straight to Kauai. The more secluded outpost of the island chain, Kauai or the “Garden Isle" is known for the spectacular amount of rainforest and natural wonder. Now just set yourself up in one of the many luxury resorts and get ready to wander the jungle and still make it back in time for cocktails.
8. Birmingham, Alabama
Surrounded by some tough competition like Atlanta and Nashville what makes Birmingham so underrated? Talented chefs are traveling to this smaller city to open top-notch restaurants that could rival its neighboring cities. For history-inspired travelers the Civil Rights Institute is a destination.
9. Madison, Wisconsin
Madison may be a capital city but what makes it so appealing to travel? Eat amazing food, explore gorgeous museums, and spend some time at one of the four lakes surrounding the city. Explore this up-and-coming creative city and spend some time relaxing on the water, all you need to make this a part of your next trip.
10. Raleigh, North Carolina
An unexpected food haven, Raleigh is home to Ashley Christensen named “Best Chef Southeast" by the James Beard Foundation. If her most-lauded establishment Pool’s Diner isn’t quite enough for you to book a ticket, then take a nice walk down an oak lined street or explore the three universities that reside there.
